Transnet invites people who have a Matric certificate (Mathematics and/or Physical Science) to apply for a trainee train assistant position. The successful candidate will be based at Ermelo North and will be reporting to a Section Manager.

Requirements:

Ability to carry heavy objects
Grade 12 (Mathematics and/or Physical Science)
Be a minimum of 1.6 meters tall and meet the minimum inherent health requirements of the job
Be over the age of 21. People under the age of 21 years of age will NOT be considered to undertake train driver or train control duties.

Well well under pressure and be able to manage stress.
Be punctual, willing to work shifts, result orientated, and safety conscious.
Be able to work well independently.

About The Trainee Programme:

The successful candidate will be required to undergo theoretical and practical learning to be trained as a train assistant.

During the selection process, applicants will be required to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments. The successful candidate will be undergoing these assessments every 12 months.

Medical tests and related safety behavioural risk assessments will be taken to determine the physical hearing, vision, mental, and fitness of the candidate.

The Psychomotor ability will be assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS) standard.

At the end of the programme, the learner will be certified to work independently as a train assistant.

Duties And Responsibilities:

The trainee train assistant will be required to assist the Train Driver en route to ensure the safe movement of the train from a required point to the destination, without delays or damage to locomotives, wagons, infrastructure track, and other equipment.

Perform various administrative duties, complete the Train journal and submit to the Section manager at sign-off after every shift to ensure timeous and accurate processing of monthly salary.

Assist the train driver in ensuring the safe and efficient driving/handling of all different types of trains/locomotive consists (airbrake,
vacuum, high speed, heavy haul, and passengers) to ensure that customers’ freight/cargo reaches its destination on time and in good condition.

Additional Duties And Responsibilities:

Performs the pre-trip preparation of the Locomotives and the whole Train prior the departure to adhere to roadworthiness
and train working rules and safety standards.

Execute shunting activities in sidings and en route according to directives to enhance safe working procedures
