South African Government Bursaries- 2023: What Is A Bursary?
Bursaries, or study funds, have become a necessity for students who either excel in their studies and those that are in financial difficulties.
In essence, through bursaries, many deserving students are able to apply at a tertiary institution to achieve their career goals.
Who qualifies For A Bursary?
Depending on the funder, there are different requirements to determine which students qualify for a certain bursary or financial assistance.
For instance, some funders require an average of 80 percent or above (distinction) whilst others, like the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (a government bursary loan), targets youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Some bursaries finance first year students only, whilst others accept applications from other students as well.
What Does A Bursary Cover?
Most bursaries cover tuition, accomodation, modules, stationery supplies, and food vouchers.
Do I need To Pay Back A Bursary?
Also to note, most bursaries are awarded for the duration of the student’s studies, on condition that the student is able to maintain his or her academic merit.
Unlike a bursary loan, students do not have to pay back a bursary. In a worst case scenario, should the student fail to provide excellent academic performance, some funders require that the whole fund be paid back and do not renew the bursary contract.
In some cases where the student did not fail a major subject, the bursary will be renewed but will not pay the fees for the repeated subject.
However, some bursaries require that a student works for a sponsor at the end of their studies.
South African Government Bursaries- 2023:
As part of the government’s initiative to increase the number of graduates in scarce skills disciplines, the national and provincial government are offering a variety of bursary opportunities for students who need financial assistance.
Only South African students qualify, and once they have graduated, they will be obligated to work in South Africa for a specified period in a specified sector.
