GYB Phase 1: School Assistants – 2024: To support teachers in classroom activities, the Gauteng Education Department implemented different PYEI phases where unemployed youth were recruited for Educator Assistants and General Assistants positions.
Learn From Home Learnerships With Stipend
While the aim of the implementation framework is to fight against youth unemployment and provide young people with skills, it also aims to support various school functions like administrative tasks and maintaining the school.
Participants who do not have Grade 12 have applied for General Assistant duties where they would maintain school gardens and perform minor repairs.
Call Centre Training & Job Placement
On the other hand, those that are in possession of a Grade 12 certificate applied for Educator Assistant positions where they could help learners with home-work, read to pupils, and assist teachers with any other classroom activities.
About The GYB Phase 1: School Assistants – 2024
The Phase IV Assistants Programme officially ended on December 14th, 2023 and many schools had no assistants.

In response, the Gauteng Education Department has implemented the Gauteng Youth Brigade phase 1, where young individuals who participated in PYEI phase IV will be called back to sign contracts and earn a monthly stipend.
Programme Title: Gauteng Youth Brigade Phase 1
Duration: 4 Months
Start Date: February 1st, 2024
Who Can Apply?
There is no application process for the programme. Individuals who participated in the EAs & GAs Phase IV programme will be called back to resume their duties.
Where To Apply For Food Aid Grants – All Provinces
However, should the need be, schools may recruit new assistants but their monthly stipend will be paid by the school. Applicants who wish to be appointed may visit their nearest schools to find out if there are any vacant positions.

I just feel like other people did not go back to the schools because they are no longer assisting in classes but at the admin and the staff of other schools are just sitting doing nothing. So my advice would be, the GYBs should assist at the classrooms and leave the school’s offices so that the pass rate of the school would be much better and learners will be given attention from both the teacher and the assistant at hand.
